When you search for “outdoor activities in Austin” or “things to do in Austin with kids”, many lists send families all over the city. As parents living in South Austin, we don’t always want to spend 45 minutes driving across town for a playground or short outing.
Over the years, we’ve found ourselves returning to the same handful of outdoor spots with our young kids. Some offer playgrounds worth the trip, some encourage exploration and discovery, and others have become our default recommendation when friends visit Austin with children.
These aren’t every outdoor attraction in Austin. They’re simply the South Austin places our family genuinely loves and continues to visit again and again. So let’s jump right in to our favorite outdoor activities in South Austin for kids.
1. Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool

Why We Keep Coming Back
When friends or family visit Austin with kids, this is often our first recommendation. Between the open space at Zilker Park and the cool water at Barton Springs, it is easy to spend several hours here without feeling rushed. It also gives your visitors a real Austin vibe.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Plenty of room to run and play
- Zilker Eagle and playground
- The shallow areas at Barton Springs
- Ducks, squirrels, and other wildlife
- Open grassy areas for picnics and games
Good to Know
- Arrive early during the summer
- Bring plenty of water and sunscreen
- Parking is free, but can fill quickly on weekends
- Plan to spend at least a few hours to make the trip worthwhile

2. Austin Nature & Science Center

Why We Keep Coming Back
This is one of our favorite places for curious kids. There is enough variety that every visit feels a little different. The kids especially love to dig, and I like to have them play in the creek afterwards so they don’t stay too dirty!
What Young Kids Will Love
- The dinosaur dig area
- Indoor and outdoor animal exhibits
- The wildlife pond
- Nature displays and hands-on exhibits
- Creek access
Good to Know
- Admission is free
- Much of the property is shaded
- Bathrooms and water fountains are available
- Digging tools are provided
- Get more details in our Austin Nature & Science Center post
3. Zilker Botanical Garden

Why We Keep Coming Back
This is great for quieter outdoor outings. The gardens encourage kids to slow down, explore at their own pace, and notice small details.
What Young Kids Will Love
- The koi pond
- The faerie garden (summer only)
- Winding paths and bridges
- Seasonal displays and exhibits
- Opportunities to spot wildlife
Good to Know
- The gardens are best explored at a slower pace
- Morning visits are especially pleasant during warmer months
- Strollers work in many areas, although some paths are uneven
- Check for seasonal children’s programming and exhibits
- Find more information in our feature on Zilker Botanical Garden
4. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Why We Keep Coming Back
The Wildflower Center combines nature, play, and seasonal programming. The experience changes throughout the year, which gives families a reason to return.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Spotting butterflies and other pollinators
- Climbing areas and natural play spaces
- Seasonal exhibits (dinosaurs, ice age, Luminations, etc.)
- Open spaces to explore

- Summer mornings are often the most comfortable
- Membership may be worthwhile for local families
- Check the calendar for special events
- Shade varies depending on the area
5. Skyline Park

Why We Keep Coming Back
Some playgrounds are convenient. Others feel worth making a special trip for. Skyline Park falls into the second category for our family.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Large playground equipment
- Multiple climbing opportunities that are not intimidating
- Splash pad
- Great views
- Space for children of different ages
Good to Know
- Shade can be limited during parts of the day
- Morning and evening visits are often best
- Bathrooms are available
- The playground can become busy on weekends
6. Circle C Metropolitan Park

Why We Keep Coming Back
This is one of those reliable parks that works for many different situations. Whether we want to spend an hour outside or stay longer, it is an easy choice.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Playground equipment
- Toy excavator and digging pit
- Room to run
- Sports fields and activities
- Opportunities for unstructured play
Good to Know
- Parking is generally easy
- The sports fields are sunny and hot in summer
- Bring water during warmer months
- Great for bringing balls, scooters, or outdoor toys
7. Dick Nichols Park

Why We Keep Coming Back
The first time we visited Dick Nichols it was mostly to check out the splash pad, but the biggest surprise ended up being the free public pool. The splash feature itself was fairly small, but the pool offered shallow areas for younger kids, shade, and enough room to spend a hot summer morning outside.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Swimming
- Playground equipment
- Walking paths
- Open spaces
Good to Know
- Bring your own pool toys/supplies
- Lifeguards are on duty even at the kiddie pool
- The splash pad isn’t always on, even in the summer
- There are tons of shaded picnic tables for food breaks
8. Barton Creek Greenbelt (Trail’s End Access)

Why We Keep Coming Back
We usually access the Greenbelt from Trail’s End. Although the Hill of Life climb back to the parking area can be challenging, we appreciate the quieter atmosphere and the relatively short walk to a creek area where our kids can safely wade and explore.
What Young Kids Will Love
- Creek access
- Throwing rocks
- Water play
- Nature exploration
- Fewer crowds
Good to Know
- The Hill of Life is steep on the return trip
- Bring water and snacks so you can spend a good amount of time down there
- Water levels can vary
- This may work best for families comfortable with short hikes
Honorable Mention: Duke’s Adventure Golf

While it does not quite fit the same category as the other locations on this list, Duke’s Adventure Golf is another reliable outdoor activity in South Austin.
Young kids can enjoy the mini golf course, and it makes a fun option when you want something active without committing to a full morning or afternoon outdoors. The highlight for our kids is a hole where you can hit the ball into a little stream and watch it flow down to the hole. The biggest drawback for us is the limited shade, especially during the summer months.
Conclusion
When you have young kids, sometimes you want a big adventure, but most of the time you just want somewhere nearby where everyone can get outside, burn some energy, and have a good outing.
These certainly are not all of the outdoor activities in South Austin for kids, but they are the places our family keeps returning to again and again. Some are special outings that we make time for several times a year, while others are easy parks and outdoor spaces that fit into an ordinary weekend.
As our kids have grown, these have become the places we know we can count on for fresh air, exploration, and fun without spending half the day in the car.
